Immediately after the assault on the Benghazi compound, White House officials announced they did not know if it was a terrorist attack, and said they believed it could have been connected to a protest outside the consulate against an anti-Islam video.
When the Administration later confirmed that they now believed it to be a terrorist attack, the Republicans pounced on Obama’s White House.
Romney’s camp has pushed Benghazi to the front of his attacks on Obama (the economy seems to have been back-burnered for now) and now Libya has become the most controversial international issue of the US election – just in time for the debates.
Should the timing of the White House statements about Benghazi be the focus of so much attention – or is this just the latest round of political theater?
